Guppy or also known as the "millionfish" is a member of Poeciliidae family - a live-bearing aquarium fish. They are a family of small fishes, an average male grows from 1.0 inch up to 1.4 inches and a female grows from 1.6 inches up to 2.4 inches. Even though that is the case, they are still one of the most popular fresh aquarium species in the world.
Things to consider when you are planning to maintain an aquarium full of guppy:
WATER TYPE
-They prefer a hard water aquarium.
-Guppies typically live in a fresh water tank but occasionally included in the marine tropical community tank because of their ability to withstand a desired amount of salt present in the water.
-Guppy's most famous characteristic is its capability in breeding. It can breed in fresh water aquarium and a marine water aquarium. So breeding in different water system and environment is not a big problem for them.
WATER TEMPERATURE
-Water temperature is a factor in raising guppies. Given the desired water temperature, guppies have an average gestation period of 28 days.
-Preferred water temperature for reproduction is about 26 oC or 79 oF.
IN THE AQUARIUM
- Requires a specialized livebearer tanks which are available from aquatic retailers.
-In order for the fry to survive, mature guppies should be separated from them. Net breeder, breeder box or a separate tank with a capacity of 20-40 liters is recommended.
-Mature guppies will eat their fry if you don't separate them.
-You should be extra careful in putting a pregnant female guppy in the breeder box because it is too soon, it may cause her to have a miscarriage.
-Build or make a well-planted tank. Plants are good hiding place and shelter for the fry. It is also serves as a good barrier for adult guppies.
-In choosing for a suitable aquarium; water wisteria, duckweed, and java moss are your excellent choices.
